I proudly say ‘happy Australia Day’ as a migrant who came to this great country nearly 60 years ago and who has been an Australian citizen for 40 years. But. It is a day to reflect. Celebrate the good but acknowledge, recognise, the wrongs committed against indigenous people.
January 26, Australia Day, is a significant day in the life of this great country. As it should be. This does not belittle the indigenous heritage which came before. I, personally, believe we should keep Australia Day on Jan. 26 but also have a separate day to respect and honour that indigenous heritage. Let Aboriginal elders pick a day. Call it Mabo Day. Whatever. Like they had a public holiday in the US this month for Martin Luther King Jr Day. Go forward united in peace Australia.
