Our Bail system is a Sick Joke
Of course he was. The 17-year-old Queensland youth, who hit and killed a pregnant woman and her partner on a pedestrian crossing on Australia Day, was on bail. Of course he was. He was facing dozens of other charges when he mowed down six-months pregnant Kate Leadbetter, 31, and her partner Matty Field, 37. The couple was walking their dogs near their home north of Brisbane. Such an ordinary, domestic thing to be doing. They were struck by a stolen Landcruiser allegedly driven by the teenager. Police believe he ran a red light and collided with a truck at an intersection, before hitting the couple who died at the scene.
The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with two counts of murder. He also faces charges of dangerous operation of a vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle. He has also been charged with two counts of burglary.
I don’t know what the maximum sentences are for these multiple charges but, if convicted, he should be jailed for a long, long time. An absolute menace to society. Our bail system is a sick joke.
